Pallet Grades Explained:
A, B, C & More

Not all pallets are created equal. Understanding pallet grades is the single most important factor in getting the right product at the right price. This guide breaks down every grade we carry and helps you choose the best option for your specific needs.

The Basics

Why Pallet Grades Matter

Pallet grading is how the industry communicates a pallet's condition, structural integrity, and appearance in a standardized way. When you order 500 Grade B pallets, both you and the supplier share a common understanding of what's being delivered — eliminating surprises at the loading dock.

Grades directly affect three things: cost, appearance, and load capacity. A Grade A pallet can cost 40–60% more than a Grade C, but for many applications — like internal warehouse transfers or one-way shipping — a Grade C performs identically and saves significant money over thousands of units.

Conversely, sending products to retail on a Grade C pallet can create a poor first impression and even risk product damage. The key is matching the grade to the job. Below, we break down each grade in detail so you can make the right call every time.

$

Cost Savings

Choosing the right grade can save 30–60% per pallet. Over thousands of units per year, the savings are substantial.

A

Appearance

Retail displays and customer-facing shipments demand clean, professional pallets. Internal use doesn't.

Load Capacity

All grades we sell are structurally sound, but newer pallets handle repeated heavy loads and racking better over time.

Premium Quality

Grade A — Premium / Like New

Grade A pallets are the top tier of recycled wooden pallets. These are units that have been used only once or twice, showing minimal signs of wear. All boards are intact with no cracks, splits, or broken stringers. The wood is clean — free of major staining, contamination, or weathering — and the overall appearance is nearly indistinguishable from a new pallet.

At Pallet Colorado, our Grade A inventory goes through a rigorous inspection process. Each pallet is checked for dimensional accuracy (within 1/4" tolerance), board condition, nailing pattern integrity, and cleanliness. We reject any pallet with noticeable repairs, water damage, or structural compromise — those get downgraded to B or C.

Grade A pallets are ideal when appearance and first impressions matter. Retail distribution centers, pharmaceutical supply chains, food-grade shipping environments, and export shipments all benefit from the consistent quality and professional look of Grade A units. If your customer or end-user will see the pallet, Grade A is the right choice.

  • Clean, professional appearance

Most Popular

Grade B — Standard / Good Condition

Grade B is the workhorse of the pallet industry, and it's the most commonly requested grade among Colorado businesses. These pallets show visible signs of use — minor scuffing, light discoloration, and surface wear are normal — but they remain fully structurally sound. Minor repairs are permitted: a replaced deck board or a re-nailed stringer, for example, as long as the repair is solid and the pallet meets dimensional specifications.

The key distinction between Grade A and Grade B is cosmetic, not structural. A Grade B pallet can handle the same loads as a Grade A — typically 2,500 lbs dynamic and up to 2,800 lbs static for a standard 48×40 GMA — but it won't look as clean on a showroom floor. For warehouse-to-warehouse shipping, domestic freight, manufacturing operations, and storage applications, Grade B delivers exceptional value.

At Pallet Colorado, Grade B pallets make up roughly 50% of our recycled inventory. We source them primarily from distribution centers and manufacturers along the Front Range, inspect each one for structural integrity, and make any necessary repairs in-house before they ship. If you're looking for the best balance of quality and cost, Grade B is almost always the answer.

Grade B Specs

  • Multiple uses, visible wear
  • Minor repairs allowed (1–2 boards)
  • Structurally sound, full load rating
  • Best value for most applications

Best For

Warehouse use, domestic shipping, manufacturing, storage, internal transfers

Budget Friendly

Grade C — Economy

Grade C pallets are the most economical option in our inventory. These are well-used pallets that show significant wear: darkened or weathered wood, multiple replaced boards, visible nail holes from previous repairs, and cosmetic imperfections throughout. Despite their appearance, every Grade C pallet we sell has been inspected and repaired to ensure it is fully functional and safe to use.

The structural standard for Grade C is clear: the pallet must support its rated load without failure. We reinforce weak points, replace broken stringers or deck boards, and verify that nailing patterns are secure. What you get is a pallet that does its job reliably — it just doesn't look pretty doing it.

Grade C pallets are the smart choice for one-way shipping where the pallet won't be returned, heavy industrial environments where pallets take a beating regardless of starting condition, temporary storage, and any application where function matters more than form. Many of our high-volume customers use Grade C for 60–80% of their operations, reserving higher grades only for customer-facing shipments.

Grade C Specs

  • Heavy wear, multiple repairs
  • Weathered appearance, staining OK
  • Inspected & repaired for safe use
  • Lowest cost per unit

Best For

One-way shipping, heavy industry, temporary storage, non-customer-facing operations

Mixed Inventory

Combo / Mixed Grade Pallets

Combo loads contain a mix of Grade A, B, and C pallets sold together at a blended price point. This is our most cost-effective option for businesses that need volume and aren't particular about uniformity. A typical combo load might be 30% A, 50% B, and 20% C — though the exact mix varies with our current inventory.

Combo pallets work best for businesses with diverse needs: use the A's for outbound customer shipments, the B's for warehouse operations, and the C's for one-way or internal use. It's a practical, zero-waste approach.

Factory Fresh

New / Unused Pallets

For applications where only new lumber will do, we manufacture and stock brand-new pallets. These are built from kiln-dried or heat-treated lumber, assembled to exact specifications, and have never been used. They offer the highest consistency in dimension, strength, and appearance.

New pallets are required for certain export shipments (with ISPM-15 certification), pharmaceutical and cleanroom environments, and customers with strict vendor requirements. We also offer custom-built new pallets to any dimension or specification.

Our Process

How We Grade at Pallet Colorado

Grading standards in the pallet industry aren't universally standardized — one supplier's Grade B might be another's Grade C. At Pallet Colorado, we use a consistent, documented grading process so you always know exactly what you're getting.

Every pallet that enters our Denver yard goes through a multi-point inspection:

1

Structural Check

We test stringers, lead boards, and deck boards for cracks, splits, and delamination. Any unit with a broken stringer is repaired or rejected.

2

Dimensional Accuracy

Pallets are measured against standard specs. Units more than 1/4" out of tolerance are flagged and corrected or downgraded.

3

Visual Inspection

We evaluate overall cleanliness, staining, weathering, and the number of previous repairs to assign the cosmetic grade.

4

Sorting & Staging

Pallets are separated by grade and stacked in designated bays. This ensures your order is filled consistently from a single grade.

Decision Guide

Which Grade Is Right for You?

Still not sure? Answer these questions to narrow down the right grade for your operation.

Will your customer or end-user see the pallet?

Yes: Choose Grade A or New. No: Grade B or C will save you money with no functional tradeoff.

Are you shipping internationally?

Export shipments typically require ISPM-15 certified pallets. We offer heat-treated pallets in Grade A and New.

Will the pallet be returned or is it one-way?

Returned: Grade B offers durability at a fair price for multi-trip use. One-way: Grade C is the most economical for pallets you won't see again.

Are you using automated systems or racking?

Automated systems and selective racking have tighter dimensional tolerances. Grade A or New pallets are recommended to avoid jams and maintain safety. Check our pallet types guide for compatibility notes.

What's your volume?

High-volume operations benefit most from Grade C and Combo loads. For smaller orders where every pallet is visible, investing in Grade A pays off in presentation value.
